The housing resources listed here may be helpful for people seeking housing to rent or buy. There are also links to information and advocacy.


Rental Assistance

Section 8 Voucher program provides rental assistance for very low-income individuals and families.  Eligible individuals and families must apply in their county and are typically placed on a waiting list, which is often very long.


Finding An Apartment

Maryland Housing Search
Search for properties throughout Maryland that best fit your needs. Provides information on each available property including rent, rental assistance, availability, accessibility, and other useful criteria.

National Accessible Apartment Clearinghouse maintains the ONLY national database of accessible apartments, with a registration of more than 80,000 units in 50 states.

Affordable Housing Online is a database of available apartments and section 8 housing.


Fair Housing

Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc. (BNI)
The mission of BNI is to stabilize integrating neighborhoods and achieve open housing in the Baltimore metropolitan area. BNI handles housing discrimination complaints, conducts a testing program throughout the metropolitan area designed to detect discriminatory housing practices and enforce the federal, state, and local laws that prohibit such discrimination, and works with Maryland Citizens to achieve fair housing.

Fair Housing Rights and Complaints
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development offers online information regarding the rights of residents who are disabled, directions on how to file a fair housing complaint, the ability to file a complaint on-line and more.

National Fair Housing Advocate Online
This site contains national news, legal updates, and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) updates.


Advocacy and Information

Maryland Centers for Independent Living provide many services to help individuals with disabilities live independently. Services vary between CIL's but may include support with access to housing, employment, transportation, communities, recreational facilities and health and social services. These centers serve all citizens with disabilities. This site offers a complete list of Independent Living Centers.

Technical Assistance Collaborative provides useful housing information and reports and the latest affordable housing news relevant to people with disabilities.


Accessibility

The Center for Universal Design
The Center for Universal Design is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes universal design in housing, public and commercial facilities, and related products.

The Home Modification Directory is a guide that provides useful information on home modification resources throughout the State of Maryland.

 

Home Ownership

Homeownership for Individuals with Disabilities Program is offered through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and is available statewide.

Home Ownership for Individuals with Disabilities
Homeownership is a cornerstone of community life and key to building wealth for all individuals, including individuals with disabilities. Purchasing a home is a complicated process and the purpose of this site is to compile resources for homeownership in Maryland. These resources are available to help you determine if homeownership is right for you, how to prepare for homeownership and the actual process of purchasing and maintaining a home of your own. This site also offers a resources in each county.

Weatherization Assistance Program helps eligible low-income households through the installation of energy conservation materials in their dwelling units. These measures both reduce the consumption of energy and the cost of maintenance for these homes. Priority is given to homeowners who may be elderly, disabled, have families with children, and/or have the highest energy consumption. Eligible renters may apply and will be given due consideration in accordance with the Weatherization Assistance Program's Rental Property Investment Program.
